Loyola Blakefield's Indoor Track program competes in the MIAA 'A' Conference—one of the most competitive conferences in the state of Maryland. The program has a history of strong top-four finishes in the conference, while averaging between 50 to 60 student-athletes on the team each year.
Each season, the team competes in the Four-Court Gym on Loyola Blakefield's campus, as well as at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex and Georgetown Preparatory School. Top athletes have also competed in several prestigious meet and invitationals—most notably, the program has enjoyed a 17-year streak of qualifying athletes for the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City.
The program boasts several alumni who have gone on to enjoy success in the sport at the collegiate level. Currently, Camden Gilmore runs for Georgetown University, Andrew Ray for the University of Chicago, Carter Bruns for Richmond and Hayden Roberts, Colin Verrett and Jackson Kodenski all run for Washington and Lee University. Several alumni have also qualified for the NCAA championships—the highest level in collegiate running. These athletes include Kevin Corbusier ’12 (Villanova University), Kenny Rowe ’16 (Georgetown University), Michael Bell (North Carolina A&T University), and Camden Gilmore ’19 (Georgetown University). In 2022, Gilmore became the first MIAA alumnus to break four minutes for the mile.
Since its inception in 1998, the program has been coached by Chris Cucuzzella '82 and Jose Albornoz. Current faculty members Nikki Love, Misha Holmes and Matt Briand also add their passion and expertise to the program. Running is a wonderful sport and lifetime activity, and interested students should seek out Mr. Cucuzzella or Mr. Albornoz on campus to learn more about the program and how they can get involved.
