Loyola Blakefield Names New Varsity Basketball Coach

Roger Garfield has been named Loyola Blakefield’s new Varsity Basketball Coach. Garfield brings a wealth of experience, having served as an Assistant Coach at Gonzaga College High School since 2016, including as Associate Head Coach from 2022 to 2025. During his tenure, the Eagles secured two Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championships and three District of Columbia State Athletic Association titles. Additionally, Garfield has been the Head Coach at the Mater Dei School since 2011, where he has coached basketball and taught English at the all-boys Catholic school serving grades 1-8. He also served as an Assistant Coach at Georgetown Preparatory School from 2010 to 2015.

 

In addition to his coaching duties, Garfield will also be taking on a teaching role at Loyola. As he joins our faculty and coaching staff, Garfield expressed his excitement:

 

“I consider it both a joy and a privilege to coach the game of basketball. Leading and teaching the young men of Loyola is an extraordinary honor. Loyola is a vibrant school with a sterling academic reputation, and I am eager to contribute by modeling accountability, leadership, and a growth mindset. Through basketball, we will nurture the holistic development of our students – in mind, body, and spirit. Together, we’ll build a program of industrious, intelligent, and compassionate athletes who are prepared to serve, lead, and – in the spirit of St. Ignatius Loyola – set the world on fire with passion. The journey will be challenging, but we will embrace those challenges wholeheartedly. To the coaches and players who have helped prepare me for this moment – and to the people at Loyola who have placed their faith in me – thank you.”

 

Roger holds a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University (2014) and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Kalamazoo College (2007). As a four-year member of Kalamazoo College’s Men’s Basketball team, he played 79 career games for the Hornets. Roger, his wife Cristi, and their children Sommer (5) and Kieran (3) are excited to join the Loyola Blakefield community.
