LOYOLA HOSTS HEALTH FAIR FOR STUDENTS

On Friday, May 20, Loyola held its inaugural Health Fair for students in Bunting Dining Hall during lunch periods. “It was my idea as a way to empower and inform our boys,” said School Nurse, Mrs. Robin Schwartz, RN, BSN, who formulated the idea after speaking with other AIMS (Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools) school nurses at their quarterly meetings. “These meetings are my opportunity to network and see what others are doing in their health rooms,” said Schwartz. “I talked with nurses whose schools had Health Fairs and got some good contact information for possible vendors.”

There was a great turnout from local organizations and public services with topics ranging from how to be and stay healthy to things that adversely affect one’s health. The following vendors did an outstanding job engaging our students by providing good visuals, hands-on opportunities, and giveaways:

  • Towson Sports Medicine talked with students about concussions (students could try on concussion goggles) and game-day diets.
  • Smoothie King provided samples of their smoothies which contain no added sugar.
  • University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) presented on sun safety and nutrition.
  • Achieve Wellness Chiropractic Center tested boys for strength and presented information on Nutrition Response Training.
  • Financial Fitness talked with students about fiscal planning and responsibility.
  • Dr. Anna Hipolito, P ’14, 17, discussed oral hygiene.
  • Glo Germ used ultraviolet light and a special hand lotion to show bacteria on hands after improper handwashing.
  • Chesapeake AED Services demonstrated Hands-Only CPR and students were able to practice on dummies. Students were also shown how to operate an AED and where they could be found on campus.
  • Baltimore County Health Department provided information about health problems associated with e-cigarettes, hookah, and chewing and dipping tobacco.
  • Baltimore County Police Department talked with students about impaired and distracted driving, and students could try on fatal vision goggles, which imitates the lack of control one has when under the influence of alcohol.

Schwartz says she's already looking forward to next year. If you have a health-related business, or know someone who might be interested in sharing his or her expertise on a health-related topic, please contact Robin Schwartz at (443) 841-3348 or by email at rschwartz@loyolablakefield.org.
