2025 Rev. Joseph M. Kelley, S.J., Medal Recipient Named

Loyola Blakefield is proud to announce Dr. James "Jim" Taneyhill, Class of 1965, as the recipient of the 2025 Rev. Joseph M. Kelley, S.J. Medal – the highest form of recognition awarded to a Loyola Blakefield alumnus.

Dr. Taneyhill's life has been a testament to service, excellence, and compassion. Raised in Rodgers Forge, Baltimore County, Jim graduated from Loyola Blakefield in 1965 before attending Loyola University (then College), where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1969. Following his graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot, including a year of service in Vietnam. His dedication to his country extended through 30 years in the Maryland Army National Guard, where he achieved the rank of Colonel and was awarded numerous commendations, including the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

After his military service, Jim pursued a career in dentistry, graduating with distinction from the University of Maryland Dental School. Over four decades, his private practice in Bel Air, Maryland, became a hallmark of excellence in dental care. As a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the International College of Dentists, Jim's professional accolades are numerous, but his commitment to serving those in need defines his legacy.

Through the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Jim has made countless mission trips to Haiti, offering free dental care to impoverished communities. Closer to home, he founded the first dental clinic at the Our Daily Bread in Baltimore, where he continues to provide weekly services to homeless individuals and veterans. A member of the Order of Malta, Jim organizes pilgrimages to Lourdes for those facing terminal illnesses, exemplifying his dedication to faith and service.

Jim’s connection to Loyola Blakefield has remained strong. As an active alumnus, he has supported the Class of ’65 Scholarship Fund, participated in fundraising initiatives, and attended countless school events. His tireless efforts reflect the Jesuit values instilled during his formative years at Loyola.

Jim is the devoted husband of Karen, a former Loyola Blakefield middle school teacher, and the proud father of three children: Katie, Joe '96, and Philip '03. His family has shared in his deep commitment to Loyola and the Jesuit mission, further cementing his legacy as a true "Man for Others."

Jim’s impact has inspired many, including his classmates from the Class of 1965, who nominated him for this honor.

“Jim is the true embodiment of a Don and the tenets of the Kelley Medal. He has made the most of his talents and gifts for the benefit of the less fortunate. Jim is a Man for Others and an exceptional role model for our current Dons. I know I have always admired Jim, and in many ways, have tried to model my behavior after his.” – Mike Keeney '65

“Jim represents everything Loyola stands for as ‘Men for Others.’ His tireless, unselfish efforts and quiet demeanor, rooted in deep Catholic values, make him an ideal role model for students and alumni. He is truly deserving of the Rev. Joseph M. Kelley, S.J. Medal.” – Loud Baird '65

“He has dedicated his life to helping others. His warm smile, unselfish nature, tireless efforts, thoughtful actions, and modest sincerity, combined with a deep Catholic faith, distinguish him. His life story is a tribute to hard work, caring actions, and faithful integrity. Jim is truly a role model for what Loyola stands for.” – Don Lavin '65
