Remembering Mr. Charles Donovan
It is with tremendous sadness we share the news that Mr. Charles Donovan passed away on Saturday, September 11. Charles was diagnosed with a tumor in his lungs in 2016. In the years since, he has bravely battled through a series of treatments with the goal to not only get healthy, but to ensure he was back at Loyola with us as soon as he could. Most recently, he has been on extended leave while under the care of close friends in Maine.
Charles joined the Loyola Blakefield community in 2005 and has taught science and coached our Speech & Debate team. He was exceedingly kind and gentle, and he never failed to greet colleagues or students with a smile. Always hardworking and diligent in his teaching, Charles devoted countless nights and weekends to the Speech & Debate program, and he is one of the reasons it is recognized as a national leader. He was also one of the first to be selected by his colleagues for our Marcus Ryu ’91 Employee Recognition Award in 2015, the highest form of recognition awarded to our faculty and staff.
We are holding a brief prayer service for our students and faculty after school on Monday, September 13. Plans for a memorial service are currently being addressed, and we will share any updates with our community once they have been determined. As a community of faith, please join us as we pray for the eternal rest of Mr. Donovan and for the comfort of those who cherish his memory.
