"A Dan for Others"
Dan McNeal, member of the Loyola Blakefield Class of 1990, and recipient of the Loyola Alumni Medal, died tragically in the World Trade Center Towers on the morning of September 11, 2001.
During his time at Loyola, Dan served as President of the SGA and his classmates dubbed 1990 the “Year of McNealism.”
A faculty member described Dan as the example of the man Loyola seeks to foster: involved, energetic, brimming over with enthusiasm for life and anything Loyola, and a friend to all he met. Dan led his life, giving of himself and thinking of others first.
Daniel W. McNeal Tribute
In July 2024 we created an exhibit in tribute of Dan McNeal's legacy. It can be found on the righthand wall of our new Learning Commons in St. Ignatius Hall. Items displayed range from McNeal's effects, including his glasses and wallet, and various news articles from the era.

The Daniel W. McNeal Scholarship Award
The Daniel W. McNeal Scholarship Award is given in loving memory to that member of the junior or senior class who embodies the characteristics that we hold dear in Jesuit education—one who lives his faith in word and deed, displays academic excellence, is actively engaged in his community, and most of all, exemplifies being a man for others. Through this prestigious award, Dan’s memory and legacy are honored and preserved for generations to come.

Painted by Christina Stone and gifted by family of Juan Millán ’90. The portrait was modeled from his likeness in the McNeal family’s last photo taken together in May 2000 at his Georgetown graduation, a few days before his move to New York City. -

The cross is made of the ruins of the Trade Towers and was gifted to the McNeal family. -
Wallet
This wallet was found on Dan McNeal’s person after the 9/11 attacks. Its contents, according to One Tragedy, Two Lives, once included an “NY subway card, receipts, a Citibank credit card that expired in 2002, an engagement picture of his sister and Chris Sheeler, the man she married." -
