Loyola Names New High School Principal

In a message to families, President Anthony Day shared exciting news regarding the search process for Loyola's new High School Principal:

The search process to identify Loyola’s new High School Principal began in January, and I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Brian L. Maraña '00, effective July 1, 2021. Brian currently serves as Loyola’s Assistant Principal for Academics – a role he has held since March 2017.

A dedicated Ignatian educator and inspiring academic leader, Brian emerged from a candidate pool that included local, national, and international applicants. Throughout the interview process, his clear commitment to Ignatian values, expertise in designing and implementing innovative academic programming, and vision for the future of the Loyola student experience shined through.

I would like to acknowledge the work of our search committee, led by Mrs. Gayle Smith (Mathematics) and Mr. Robert Robinson (Marketing & Communications) and comprised of representatives from our faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees. The extensive search led to highly qualified finalists who were assessed via a robust interview and evaluation process. Thank you to all who took part in this important work.

Upon accepting the appointment, Maraña reflected upon his time as a student. "I loved my time as a Loyola student, and in particular I cherished the holistic approach to education – the critical thinking skills instilled in the classroom, the sense of meaning and purpose developed on retreats and service experiences, and the brotherhood and fulfillment provided by clubs and extracurricular activities," said Maraña. "It was this experience to holistic education that led me to continue my studies at another Jesuit institution, Loyola University in Maryland. I have been part of Jesuit institutions continually since then, and I haven’t looked back."

Maraña also noted his excitement in stepping into his new role. "Every day I am amazed how our faculty and staff cultivate passion, talent, faith, and compassion in our students," said Maraña. "What excites me the most as I move into this role is the opportunity to give voice to this work and to the remarkable ways that our educators transform lives."

While in the Philippines, he began studies toward a graduate degree at Ateneo de Manila University (degree conferred in 2017). Brian returned to Maryland in 2015 as a Theology teacher here at Loyola. In 2017, he assumed the role of Assistant Principal for Academics, and he is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education at Johns Hopkins University.
