Nick Breschi ’13 Named New Director of Aquatics

A familiar face will take over the reins of Loyola’s storied swimming and water polo programs as Nick Breschi ’13 begins his tenure as Director of Aquatics in April. Breschi was a member of multiple championship teams during his time as a student and served as varsity water polo team captain during his senior year. Breschi attended Towson University, where he served as team captain, was a member of four conference championship teams, and a 2016 Olympic trial qualifier. He graduated in May 2017 with a degree in Sports Management and has served as head coach of Loyola’s JV swimming and water polo teams during the 2017-18 school year.

“I am extremely excited to take on this role and have the opportunity to give back to the program that helped to shape the athlete that I became,” said Breschi. “I want to continue the excellent history of the program and help enable our Dons to grow to be better swimmers and even better men for others. They understand the value of hard work and I am thrilled to play a role in their development in the pool, and in how they represent Loyola.”

One of the premier high school programs in the nation, Loyola’s varsity swimming team has won 20 out of the last 22 MIAA championship titles and six National Catholic Swimming Championships. The only school in the MIAA to support a diving team, Loyola regularly produces athletes who go on to compete at Division I, II, III schools that fit their academic and competitive needs. The water polo program, founded in 1997, competes annually for the MIAA Championship titles, appearing in 14 of the last 16 finals.

In addition to his 20 years as head of the swimming and water polo programs, Keith Schertle, a member of Loyola’s Athletics Hall of Fame, has worked closely with Breschi as a coach and colleague. “Bringing Nick on as the new Director of Aquatics is 100% the right move at this time,” said Schertle, who has filled in during the search process. “Nick brings his knowledge of Loyola, the history of our programs, and his experience as an accomplished athlete. Working with Nick over the past year has shown me that he is ready to take us to new heights.”

As Director of Aquatics, Breschi will oversee all interscholastic aquatics programs, work in conjunction with the Physical Education Department in implementing aquatics into their curriculum, and run Loyola Blakefield Aquatics, Inc. (LBA), an independent club program hosted at Loyola.

“We are thrilled to have someone like Nick take on this role,” said John Marinacci, Principal. “We are not only getting a knowledgeable and dedicated coach, but someone who also fully understands what it means to live the mission of the school while competing at a high level. I can’t wait to witness the successes that Nick’s leadership will bring, and the many ways he will serve as an inspiring mentor to our Dons.”
