Johns Hopkins senior guard and co-captain Pat O'Connell '06 is having a great senior year for the Blue Jays. O'Connell was featured in a recent article on MIAASPORTS.NET.  O'Connell is making his mark on the Johns Hopkins record books. He is just 20 steals shy of setting the all time steals record. 500-200-100 ~O'Connell joining some elite company from the Hopkins program history. On Wednesday night, O’Connell dished out four assists to push him over the 200 mark for his career. That also made him just the fifth player in program history with atleast 500 points, 200 assists and 100 steals for his career. He now has 776 points, 210 assists and 159 steals for his career. O’Connell: • Needs 8 three-point field goal attempts to move into 12th and 36 to move into 11th (has 201) • Needs to make 4 three-point field goals to move into 14th, 5 to move into 13th and 11 to move into 12th (has 67) • Needs 6 free throw attempts to rank 12th, 7 to rank 11th and 8 to rank 10th (has 304) • Needs 4 free throws to rank 9th and 16 to rank 8th (has 231) • Needs 22 defensive rebounds to move into 12th (has 288) • Needs 2 assists to rank 12th, 7 to rank 11th and 10 to rank 10th (has 210) • Needs 20 steals to become JHU’s all-time steals leader (has 159)

The Dons beat the Eagles of McDonogh on Friday night 38-33 behind 14 points from Senior Matt Mathias. Fellow senior Mike Fitzpatrick added 9 points and 5 assists and senior Emmitt Cahill gathered 9 rebounds for Loyola, who improved their season record to 10-7 The Dons are 4-4 in the BCL and 4-4 in the MIAA "A" Conference and have a solid hold on 4th place in both leagues behind Mt. St. Joe, St. Frances, and Calvert Hall.
The Dons next are in action tomorrow (Sunday) @ Mt. St. Joe, tip-off is set for 3:30 pm. The Dons look to avenge an early season lopsided victory by the Gaels.

With his recent 33 point game in a win vs. Cardinal Gibbons senior guard Matt Mathias became the fourth player under Coach Davalli to score 30+ points. Pat O'Connell did it once with 31 vs. St. Frances during the 2005-2006 season; Brett Keller did it once with 30 vs. McDonogh also during the 2005-2006 season; Matt Rum did it three times with 30 vs. Curley (06’-07’), 31 vs. Towson Catholic (08’-09’), 32 vs. MSJ (08’-09’). Mathias over the last six games coming into Friday nights game vs. McDonogh has averaged 24.5 points per game for the Dons.

Loyola advanced to the semi's of the National Jesuit Christmas Classic being held at Georgetown Prep with a 68-56 win over Canisius High School (from Buffalo, NY). Seniors Matt Mathias and Mike Fitzpatrick led the way for the Dons. Mathias pumped in 19 points added 5 rebounds and had 3 assists. His backcourt mate Fitzpatrick added 18 points and dished out 8 assists while going 13-15 from the free throw line. Loyola will next take on St. Xavier (OH), Tuesday 12/29 at 6:15 at Georgetown Prep. Game Summary by Eddie Bradley '10 Tuesday, the Bears of Landon School clashed with the Loyola Dons in a non-conference matchup. The Bears prevailed 55-50 behind 23 points from Senior Danny Rubin and Joe McDonald’s 17 markers. Coach Andy Luther’s team dominated the glass all throughout the game outrebounding the Dons 30-19 behind a game-high 11 boards from McDonald. In addition, the team snagged 10 steals and forced 13 turnovers. The Bears led throughout the opening quarter and increased their lead to 10 with 5:33 left in the second quarter. However, Loyola answered as Mike Fitzpatrick hit a half court shot as time expired in the first half. The Bears led by a mere 4, 27-23 going into the half. The Dons continued to fight throughout the second half, cutting the lead to 3 points at four different times in the second half. Rubin iced the game late in the fourth quarter going 6 for 6 from the charity stripe. For the Dons, senior Mike Fitzpatrick scored a team high 16 points and dished out 4 assists. Fellow senior Matt Mathias added 11 markers, struggling to find his normal rhythm, 2 of 13 from the field. The Bears will host another MIAA A conference opponent as Cardinal Gibbons will travel to Bethesda on Thursday. Loyola returns to Towson, this upcoming Sunday, hosting Mount St. Joseph with a 3:30 tip-off scheduled. Loyola opened up a 33-15 half time lead and never looked back as they won 52-34 in their BCL and MIAA “A” Conferences opener. Senior Matt Mathias paced the Dons with 14 points and 4 assists while sophomore forward Jordan Floyd added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Floyd sparked the Dons offense in the first half when he came off the bench to score 10 of his 12 points. Loyola iced the game in the 4th quarter going 11/12 from the charity stripe. The 2009 Loyola Shootout featured 19 teams from the Greater Baltimore area. In the 7th grade Gold Division, 7 teams competed for the title. In a tight semifinal matchup, Freedom triumphed over a tough St. Ursula squad to advance to the final. Mt. Royal knocked off the HCYP Sharks in the other semifinal and continued its great play with a convincing win over Freedom in the finals. In the 8th grade Blue Division, #11 seed St. Pius X upset #6 Gamber Hornets to advance to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals saw the top four seeds advance: Team Melo, HCYP Sharks 1, WHC Heat, and Mount Royal. In a tightly contested semifinal, Mount Royal edged WHC Heat to earn the right to play Team Melo. Team Melo knocked off HCYP Sharks in their semifinal. In the Blue Division Championship Game, Team Melo and Mount Royal battled to the end as Team Melo held on for the four point victory. Johns Hopkins' senior Pat O'Connell '06, St. Mary's College sophomore James Davenport '08, and Washington College sophomore Sal Schittino '08 will all take part in this weekend's Pride of Maryland Tournament. The tournament is a showcase for state Division III basketball programs. The opening round on Friday will take place the various participating schools' home gym.
